UberStudent-LXDE is Here!
by Stephen Ewen - Saturday, September 4, 2010, 02:09 AM

UberStudent-LXDEI'm pleased to announce the availability of UberStudent-LXDE!

Designed for the academic computing needs of those with low-specification machines, I believe you'll agree that no other lightweight distribution better does this, while also smartly providing for your everyday computing needs.

Like the full version of UberStudent, the lightweight version is designed around a "core skills" approach, which centers on research and writing, study, and self-management skills, essentials required of all successful college students regardless of their major. It does this by providing some of the best cloud computing applications available across each application category, although we've been careful to make sure your core productivity is not dependent upon an Internet connection.

Despite the very useful nature of the lightweight version, we definitely recommend the full version if you have a modern PC and serious academic work to do. By its very nature and design, the lightweight version does not, and indeed cannot, match the full version's power, elegance, ease-of-use, and expandability. Many, however, will just want a lightweight platform for whatever reason. We think you'll just love UberStudent-LXDE!

So what are you waiting for? Give UberStudent-LXDE a try!

Help Wanted: UberStudent is Looking for Leaders, Evangelists, Developers, Community Organizers, and Others
by Stephen Ewen - Saturday, August 21, 2010, 12:46 AM

UberStudent is looking for leaders, evangelists, developers, community organizers, and others.

The global/local mission of UberStudent is to increase the academic success of higher education and advanced secondary students by providing and instructing in use of the premier open source academic computing platform, and to advance the adoption of open source computing in educational institutions.

UberStudent enjoys first-mover advantage within the Linux world for the higher education and advanced secondary school sectors. Due to events in these sectors worldwide—namely, the convergence of increased academic expectations alongside decreased funding to accomplish them, both in often dramatic degree—UberStudent has emerged at an important historical moment. To advance as we could and should, UberStudent needs broad participation from interested parties.

UberStudent is deeply committed to providing opportunities for every user to have an important role in UberStudent. Whatever your skills or hoped-for skills, we need them and will seek to help you develop them.

We're also deeply committed to developing open source leaders, and realize that most leaders will emerge from among our users.

For all formal positions, aptitude and potential can be just as important as experience.

All positions within UberStudent feature broad autonomy to achieve UberStudent's mission. Formal positions are loosely organized by region/language group and include but are not limited to:
  • Regional Project Leads and Assistants. Regional Project Leads advance the mission of UberStudent within their geographic region/language group and are given broad autonomy to do so. They run the UberStudent project for their language group with the help of the developer, evangelist, community organizer, and other members of the UberStudent community in his or her language group.
  • Regional Liaisons and Assistants. Liaisons are persons who can act as "go-betweens" between UberStudent and potential adopters within their region/language group, with the assistance of his or her assistants and community members. Tasks are oriented toward both end-users and potential institutional adopters. Skills in direct marketing and social networking are key.
  • Developers. Opportunities for developers are substantial and potentially career-building within UberStudent. Whatever your skill level, whether just exploring or moderately-skilled or advanced, there is a place for you.
  • Community Organizers. Facilitating a diverse community can be a complex task. You can learn to rise to the challenge within UberStudent.
  • Other - Write Your Own Job Description! There's no way we'd even attempt to come up with a complete list of roles required for UberStudent to excel at its mission. We don't know them all! Do you have ideas or a particular angle from which to advance the UberStudent mission? If so, do tell us!
For all positions, the pay is nothing at this point. Mine is nothing at this point! However, you'll be getting in at the ground level with a computing organization that is really set to go places. There are many ways to monetize a free operating system and I fully anticipate that, as the number of UberStudent users grows, so will be the opportunities to make a living or supplementary income from it. The greater your involvement, the greater you can potentially benefit.

If you're interested, post in the Forum. You can also contact me personally.

I very much welcome your involvement in UberStudent at whatever level you wish! smile

UberStudent LXDE Version Coming
by Stephen Ewen - Sunday, August 15, 2010, 07:44 PM

I'm currently building an UberStudent LXDE version. It will fit on a single CD and will be designed for speed and computers with lower specs. As such, it will obviously lack some features compared with the GNOME version, but I think the end product will be very nice and useful. On the current schedule, expect it within hopefully a few weeks!

I really welcome your input on the forum. Now's your chance to have input into what this version will do and feature. If you have experience packaging debs, your help is needed for that, too. smile
